Convincing the trucking industry to switch from paper to electronic logbooks to comply with the ELD mandate was not easy. The mandate regulated hours-of-service in a way that the paper recording system could not.

In the past, there was no way to regulate how many hours a driver spent behind the wheel. The extra hours of driving posed a safety risk and increased the number of fatigue-related accidents.

Despite the possibility of improving safety, it was not easy to get driver buy-in. With electronic logbooks, drivers could not pass the maximum hours-of-service, which they had in the past. Fewer hours at a time on the road meant more time spent completing each job.

As the ELD mandate compliance deadline approached in April of last year, many companies rushed to find the least expensive solution with fast implementation.

This plan backfired for many companies that found that inexpensive solutions came with many problems such as poor customer service and ineffective, outdated solutions.
